I am a Māori. Do I have to go on the Māori roll?
No. If you are enrolling for the first time then you can decide whether you want to go on the General roll or Māori roll by signing the appropriate panel on the enrolment form.

If you are updating your enrolment details, you must stay on the same roll type as you were previously enrolled on. The next opportunity for you to change roll types is during the Māori Electoral Option which is scheduled to be held following the next Census of Population and Dwellings.

I am on the Māori /General roll and I wish to change. How can I do that?
A Māori Electoral Option exercise normally takes place every five years following the population and dwelling census. During the Option, people who have identified themselves on their enrolment form as being of Māori descent have the opportunity to review the electoral roll type they are enrolled on. The next Option is due to be held  following the next Census of Population and Dwellings. Until then, you must remain on the roll type that you are currently enrolled on.
