In 2015 and 2016, New Zealanders voted in two referendums on the future of the New Zealand flag. The results of both referendums are available at www.electionresults.govt.nz.
First, between 20 November and 11 December 2015, a postal referendum asked the question If the New Zealand flag changes, which flag would you prefer? Voters were asked to rank the five alternative flag designs selected through the Flag Consideration process.
Then, between 3 and 24 March 2016, a second postal referendum was held to choose between the most preferred option from the first referendum and the current New Zealand flag. The flag that received the most votes in the second referendum would be the official flag of New Zealand.
As a result of the referendum process, the current New Zealand flag was retained.
