General Description
The East Coast electorate comprises the communities of Maketu, Edgecumbe, Whakatane, Opotiki and Gisborne.
Summary of Reasons
The existing East Coast electorate is already 8% under quota. It loses a population of approximately 6000 to Napier and therefore requires more population. The Commission chose to move the boundary at the northern end to Maketu, which continued the trend favoured by previous Commissions.
