General Description

The Waimakariri electorate covers the area between the Ashley/Rakahuri and Waimakariri Rivers, including Rangiora, Oxford and Kaiapoi, and also extends south to include Redwood and Belfast in the northern part of Christchurch City.

Summary of Reasons

This electorate has grown rapidly (currently 13% over quota). The electoral population has been set under quota (to accommodate projected growth) by shedding the dense urban areas of Papanui/Northlands – west of Main North Road to Christchurch Central. This results in Waimakariri being 4.6% under quota and growing strongly. The rural portions of the electorate are unchanged, with the Waimakariri river forming the southern border (except near Christchurch). The Ashley/Rakahuri river forms the northern boundary.
