General Description
The Waitaki electorate comprises the area from south of Timaru to Shag Point, and extends inland to the main divide of the Southern Alps. It includes the Waitaki River catchment, Mackenzie Country, much of Central Otago, including Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell, and the lake communities of Tekapo, Pukaki, Ohau, Hawea and Wanaka.
Summary of Reasons
As a result of the changes proposed for the electorates of Clutha-Southland and Dunedin North the electorate was left short of the approximately 19,000 people that are required to meet the quota. The Commission has moved the northern boundary to include all of the Waitaki, Waimate and McKenzie Districts and a portion of the Timaru district. The boundary excludes Timaru and a coastal strip up to the Rangitata River. This effectively creates a new electorate with a substantial northward shift into South Canterbury. A major geographic feature through the middle of the electorate is the Waitaki River. The Commission considers this name reflects the electorate as a whole.
