General Description
The West Coast-Tasman electorate extends along the coast from Jacksons Bay in the south to Farewell Spit in the north, and then across Tasman Bay to the Waimea Inlet. This electorate covers a large area of the South Island west of the Southern Alps and includes the communities of the West Coast and towns of Murchison, St Arnaud, Wakefield, Motueka and Takaka.
Summary of Reasons
The population of West Coast-Tasman is outside the allowable quota range and is projected to continue to be for the future. This necessitates a boundary change. The Commission proposes that the change occur by shifting the boundary northwards towards Brightwater to include Wakefield and nearby valleys. The proposed change allows the electorate to remain within the quota range as projected until 2011. This change of boundary mostly follows the 2004 ward boundary except for the township of Brightwater which remains in the electorate of Nelson. To have included the population of Brightwater would have placed Nelson under permitted quota range
