Please note this guidance was last updated for the 2014 General Election.  The Electoral Commission is currently in the process of updating this guidance for the 2017 General Election.

The Electoral Commission has prepared this information to explain your rights and obligations as the secretary of a registered political party for a general election.

Rules are in force for political party election advertising, expenditure, donations and loans.  Please study these requirements carefully. There are serious consequences for non-compliance including prosecution for corrupt or illegal practices.

This information is a general guide and reflects the Electoral Commission’s interpretation of the law and how it intends to apply the law.  The Electoral Commission welcomes the opportunity to discuss any areas that require clarification.

This information does not cover every aspect of electoral law and procedure.  For further information, the party secretary should consult the Electoral Act 1993, the Electoral Regulations 1996, or seek legal advice.  The Electoral Commission is also happy to discuss any specific questions that you have.
