Application to Register as a Registered Promoter - 2011 General Election and Referendum

 If you spend or intend to spend more than $12,000 (including GST) on:

  • election advertising, or

  • referendum advertising, or

  • advertising that includes both election advertising and referendum advertising

during the regulated period, the law requires you to register as a promoter with the Electoral Commission. It is a serious offence to spend more than $12,000 during the regulated period without being registered as a promoter. 

The law requires that the Electoral Commission must maintain a Register of Registered Promoters available for public inspection for the 2011 General Election and referendum listing the names and contact addresses of registered promoters. 

The purpose of the register is to enable the public to ascertain whether a person is a registered promoter and, if so, the address of that person and whether an advertisement is promoted by a registered promoter. The promoter’s name and address as shown on the register must appear on any election or referendum advertisements published by the promoter.

Making an application

To register you must complete the application form available for download here. Please refer to the information on completing the application attached to the form or contact the Electoral Commission for further information.

An application must be made by:

  • the individual who wants to be a registered promoter, or

  • a person authorised by the board of directors to make the application on behalf of a company, or

  • if the promoter is not an individual or company, by the promoter’s representative who is duly authorised by the promoter to make the application.

Registered promoters will be listed on this website.

Cancellation of registration

The Electoral Commission will cancel a promoter’s registration at the promoter’s request provided the registered promoter has incurred less than $12,000 expenses in relation to election advertisements and/or referendum advertisements. To request cancellation of registration as a promoter, please complete the cancellation form available for download on the right hand side of this page.

The Electoral Commission must cancel the registration of a promoter if the Commission is satisfied that a promoter is no longer eligible to be registered. 
 
Where the Electoral Commission cancels a registration the promoter will be notified within 10 working days of the cancellation and the reason for cancellation.
