Masterton on election day, 22 July 1884

A crowd gathers outside a tobacconist shop in Masterton on election day, 22 July 1884. The three effigies on top of the building represent the candidates in the Wairarapa North seat: George Beetham (a dandy), R. E. Hawkins (a pirate) and Alexander Hogg (a pig). After the election, which was won by Beetham, the effigies were auctioned off.
