Your Voice, Your Choice: Teaching Units

The focus of these Level 5 teaching units is on connecting the voting system to students’ own lives to deepen their understanding about how New Zealand’s system of government operates. The students will consider the relationship between local issues and our national system of government, and how they themselves can participate in this system.

The units are designed to be followed in order, but you are welcome to adapt any activity for your own planning.   The material is flexible for different levels. You are encouraged to adapt this sequence of learning activities to meet the specific needs and experiences of your students.

Conceptual Strand:

Identity, Culture and Organisation

Students learn about society and communities and how they function.  They also learn about the diverse cultures and identities of people within those communities and about the effects on the participation of groups and individuals.

Level 5 achievement objectives

Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to:

  • understand how systems of government in New Zealand operate and affect people's lives.

Level 4 achievement objectives

Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to:

  • understand how people participate individually and collectively in response to community challenges.
  • understand how the ways in which leadership of groups is acquired and exercised have consequences for communities and societies.
